What is Gunite?

Gunite is concrete that is mixed and applied in a particular way. First, we build a rebar structure; then, instead of building forms and filling them with pre-mixed concrete, we use a high-pressure hose similar to a fireman’s hose to pipe concrete and water mix as a spray over the rebar.

What is the Lifespan of a Gunite Pool?

Gunite pools are very long-lasting, with an estimated longevity of up to 100 years with proper maintenance, thanks to the durability of its concrete structure. Note that the pool’s plaster surface may need to be resurfaced every 7 to 15 years, depending on usage and maintenance. With regular care, including proper cleaning, balancing of water chemistry, and timely repairs, a gunite pool can remain a beautiful, functional feature in a backyard for several decades.

How is Gunite Made?

The process involves combining dry sand and cement, which are then blown through a hose using compressed air. As the mixture exits the nozzle, water is added to create a wet concrete mixture that can be shaped and smoothed. Gunite’s application method, also known as “dry-mix shotcrete,” allows for a highly controlled and dense concrete structure that is strong and durable. This technique makes gunite especially well-suited for building custom shapes and designs, making it a popular choice for swimming pools and other structural applications where longevity and versatility are essential.

What is Shotcrete, and How is it Different From Gunite?

Shotcrete similar to gunite, in that it’s a hose-applied concrete mix. The difference with gunite is that shotcrete is pre-mixed with water in the truck, and only then piped in via hose. While shotcrete is easier to install because it takes less skill to apply, it doesn’t quite match the quality and durability of gunite. We don’t use shotcrete because our team has the skill and experience to properly mix and install gunite, and we believe it’s worth the effort given the higher quality of the end product.

Which is the Better Material – Gunite or Shotcrete?

In terms of design versatility and durability, gunite is the better material than shotcrete. The key element for installing gunite is having a capable hoseman, which is a relatively uncommon skill and takes a lot of practice to perfect. The Lions Creek advantage is that we have the team with the skill to apply gunite, so your gunite pool project will last longer than the equivalent shotcrete installation.
